A couple of more statistical tidbits about the "unassisted division" through its first 7 championships that proves how competitive we are:
1) We've had 7 different champions, never had a repeat winner;
2) In 2003, the defending champ Scott Lusk, qualified for the final 8 match play; that is the only year the defending champ qualified in the top 8.
3) Last week John Getchell became the first low medalist on qualifying day to go on and win the championship; in all other years, the low medalist was upset during match play.
4) The lowest handicap golfer, in any given year, has never won the unassisted championship.
5) Of the 6 unassisted players playing this year that had already locked-up spots on the '08 Fightmaster Cup team (Lusk, Gentry, Day, Etscorn, Frey, Quevillon), only 2 qualified for match play, and those 2 were eliminated in round 1.
Welcome to the North American One Armed Golf Association website. Our organization was formed to provide a competitive venue for one armed golfers, playing championship courses throughout North America. Founded in the year 2000, the NAOAGA has held 7 annual tournaments, the 8th to be held this July 1-3 at Covered Bridge Golf Club. Additionally, the organization is designed to promote the positive, inspirational spirit of the game, to individuals that have suffered physical limitations.
The Match Play format was selected to determine the annual champion in each of two divisions. Assisted division golfers are allowed to utilize prosthetics, and/or touch the club with two limbs. The Unassisted division allows golfers to touch the club with only one arm. The Annual Championship, held in different regions of the North American continent each year, is structured in the traditional manner in which golf was founded over 150 years ago. The first day of stroke play determines the low 8 qualifiers in each division. The qualifiers then proceed to Match Play. A Champion is determined from each division. Nonqualifiers participate in a series of alternate shot and best ball events throughout the week, playing for pride, prizes, and the love of competition.
When the NAOAGA was created, the founders envisioned an international competition similar to the Ryder Cup. In 2008, that vision will come to fruition as the Fightmaster Cup. The Society of One Armed Golfers, a European organization founded in 1932, and chartered by the R& A, have accepted a challenge from the NAOGA. Each organization will field a team of the best 12 one armed golfers to compete over 3 days, in the exact format of the Ryder Cup, to be played every 2 years alternating between North America, and the European continent.
Membership in the NAOAGA is easy. Golfer or not, we need your support. Surf thru the website and see how to join, or learn more about the organization. Read about the Annual Champions in past years, or learn more about upcoming tournaments.
